You Change or Climate Change

Can we still save Mother Earth? Is it not too late?
Earth is facing a variety of environmental problems. The greatest environmental threat is the Climate Change. Today, Earth’s climate is changing from its usual global climate pattern. In fact, there are compelling evidences that it is happening rapidly. It is affecting all parts of the world.
Scientists have recently discovered that glaciers melt rate has accelerated causing sea level rising rate to increase than of last century. Those who are at immediate risk are those who are living in low land areas like Philippines. This causes floods that kill lots of people and damage houses and crops. Death toll from floods and landslides hit parts of Mindanao last February 2011, thus, affecting hundreds of families. Extreme weather events are also happening. Last 2010, Russia experienced heat wave, a long period of an abnormal high temperature that caused massive withered crops affecting people’s livelihood. Such warm temperature affects also human health. There are reports too that many died due to heat wave. On the other hand, last January 2011, Baguio City’s temperature dropped to 9 centigrade causing a low agricultural production and increasing health risks to the residences.
Climate change causes greater destruction not only to humans but to all kinds of species as well. Some species are unable to adapt quickly with the rapid change of the Earth’s climate, as a result, they die. Others have to move to a cooler place only that it is not a suitable habitat for them so they die. Abrupt habitat change would definitely lead to animal extinction. If this happens surely our biodiversity will be affected. Biodiversity provides many key benefits to humans. We depend on biodiversity. Furthermore, biodiversity loss has a wide range of impacts on humans. One of these is food security.
Our mother earth is in great danger and so we are. Should we make a response now? Earth is our home. We must protect it in our own little ways. Such little ways would make a big difference to help our Mother Earth!
